Because I know you are more interesting than I

So not that I'm writing a screenplay or anything... not that I'm in a screenwriting class... not that I'm a writer at all, really...

But...

If I was writing a screenplay, and the topic happened to be dating, and I needed to do research...

Fuck it.

Hey guys, I'm in a screenwriting class, and I'm writing a script about dating. Specifically, Internet dating (think Match.com, not cybersex). If you have any stories for me about dates you've been on (particularly the bad ones), I would love to hear them. If you have any stories about Internet dating in general, I would also be delighted. If it's too long or too... um... detailed, email me at tabtheblog@gmail.com.

Detail is key. What makes the date memorable? Why did it work or not work? I do want to hear your thoughts about why a date in general works, but I also want specifics. Mostly, I want funny stories. This post, for example, would be perfect. First dates and your thoughts on them would be great. And, if you feel compelled to make up an imaginary date because you want to fool me or impress me with your witty imagination, go ahead. I want that too. If you want to send me your online dating profile and ask me out...

I'll think about it.

Oh. My next post will be about an awkward date I went on. I was going to bribe you with pictures of me, but I'm a wimp.

A, c'mon. I'll post pictures if you do!

Um... that's all you got? How about describing a date first.

Is this for a feature-film, MOTW or a pilot?

What's your hook?

I do have a story I could email you involving online dating and machetes...it's a laugh/cry/cringe thing. And fairly messy. The stuff movies are made of.

And if you need any screenwriting help, feel free to ask...I have an agent representing two scripts of mine ;D

Damnit! All my best Internet dating stories are currently in production. It's a fantastic idea for a screenplay. The whole subject tends to generate great interest and it's a breeding ground for pure comedy.

Um, I've been on one, and one ever, internet date.
I was 20 and he was 24. We met on a chat room, and then switched our conversations to AIM. This went on for about two months before I agreed to meet him for coffee.
I met him, not a bad looking guy, and I was pleased. We started talking and he asked if I'd like to go to a movie. I agreed and he said he'd drive.
He had a big truck, and when i got into the big truck, he had to move his hand-gun to a different area of the truck. His only answer to "why do you need that?" was "You never know when you'll need one."
I was creeped out.
We got to the movie theatre, and watched a movie.
Afterwards, he said he'd drive me back to my car.
I got into the big truck again, only this time I noticed that his phone was blinking.
He had opened the door like a gentleman, and was walking around the truck when I saw the blinking, I glanced at the screen, 24 missed calls.
He got in and i told him that his phone was blinking.
He opened and closed it quickly, and said, "Oh, just my friend calling me."
Did not mention that it was 24 times...
I never spoke to him again, it was too creepy after the coffee.

I have a lot of bad Internet dating stories, but I don't think they're particularly horrendous. I have at least one good one, though, because I'm still seeing him over a year later. I think you'll most commonly find women complaining that men lie about their height/post old photos from when they still had hair, and men complaining that women lie about their age/posting old photos from when they were not fat. I've met people whose profiles said they were two inches taller than me who turned out to be an inch shorter than me, went out to coffee with a guy who then called me multiple times a day for weeks and hung up on my answering machine (to try again when my AIM went off from idle) before calling me stupid because I was a Humanities major and not a Science major (weird), and another guy who had three margaritas on our 90-minute date and then drove away in his sports car (we met for dinner, not "drinks", and that just didn't seem safe).

None of these, and I mean none, compare to sipwine's gun-in-the-truck guy.

Internet dating should be outlawed... at least in Canada anyway... you should see the scags that post their picture up here... gives new meaning to the phrase "dog pound".

If you're looking for firsthand experiences with internet dating mI would suggest looking the archives of
charming but single. She has a few posts about her experiences on match.com.

Bachelor - Maybe there are "scags" in the capital but before you condemn the entire country, perhaps you should try your hand out West. Nothing but hot babes here waiting to not give you the time of day.

TAB - I was also going to suggest checking Sex and Moxie, which I'm sure you know...seems that there is a lot of Internet dating and match.com scenarios going on on there. I also have a story of internet dating that actually did produce a decent guy...

Wanderlusting: I stand corrected... east of Ontario, the prospects - if you are any indication - look extremely positive. :-) But as is so often the case, girls of your calibre are often the ones taken.

I think that's the last frontier for me. I've pretty much covered everything up until that point but I'm way too paranoid to ever actually internet date. Good luck on your screenplay

wanderlusting - I don't know what MOTW is... it's a feature but the original idea is for a series. Please email me your story! Thanks for your help :)

dropout - Okay, people are going to start finding out about The Ex if you keep up with comments like that.

the ambiguous blob - Well... remember that I'll take any stories about dating, not just internet ones.

sipwine - Your good judgment is comforting. Scary story.

strange bird - Gotta love the stalkers. And I don't just need horrendous ones. Just thoughts, anecdotes. Internet or otherwise.

the bachelor - Um... I'll keep that in mind.

bittersweet confusion - Thanks, I do plan to read through some of her entries. Any stories of your own?

beth - Remember, it doesn't need to be an internet dating story.

Oh girl, I have tons.. tho the last one, even tho we broke up a few months later, was the best one so far. And I'm still online somewhere and attempting, not that I skirt meeting randoms elsewhere out in real live public. But mine have never been horrendous - but I've got a few good ones for you.

Oh my. I'm just dipping my toes back into the world of internet dating, having had some fairly bizarre experiences a few years ago, including one man who thought it was OK to post a picture of somebody else entirely, just because he'd taken the photo.

Oh Lord. I might have some stories for you somewhere in my vault. I'll have to think about this. I do know that then highlight of my online dating history would be when the site I was registered on, ran my profile and picture in every major newspaper in the US. Seriously. I guess I didn't really read the small text when I was checking 'I agree'. It said something about giving permission to the site to use your profile where ever they want. I guess they deemed my profile as a good one to put out for the entire country to see. I started getting calls from friends in Chicago, Boston, NYC, DC, Seattle, etc saying that I was in their city newspaper asking if I was having that much trouble finding local dates that I felt the need to advertise to the entire country? It was great. No, not really. My inbox got flooded by men from virtually everywhere. It was my 5 minutes of fame I suppose. I even have some of the newspapers that I appeared in. Gah! What fun times I used to have.
